José Rizal

José Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, novels that sharply criticized Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. His works were banned by colonial authorities, and Rizal was executed in 1896 for sedition and rebellion. His writing directly contributed to the Philippine independence movement, and he is today honored as the country's national hero.
