The second of Boris Akunin's beloved Erast Fandorin detective series, set during the 1877–78 Russo-Turkish War, in which the elegant investigator untangles a web of espionage. Akunin — pen name of Georgian-Russian author Grigory Shalvovich Chkhartishvili — was one of Russia's best-selling authors. He publicly condemned Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, left Russia, and his books were subsequently removed from Russian bookstores and libraries.
