Ukraine's literary suppression has been driven primarily by external powers. The Russian Empire's Ems Decree of 1876 banned Ukrainian-language publications and education. Soviet rule brought the Executed Renaissance — the mass arrest and killing of Ukrainian intellectuals in the 1930s — and continued restrictions on Ukrainian cultural expression. Since Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion, Ukrainian books and authors have been targeted for confiscation in occupied territories, and Russia has banned Ukrainian-language literature across occupied regions as part of systematic cultural erasure.

Taras Shevchenko

Taras Shevchenko's 1840 poetry collection established modern Ukrainian literary language and became the foundational text of Ukrainian national consciousness. The Tsarist government banned it, sentenced Shevchenko to serve as a common soldier, and specifically forbade him from writing or drawing for ten years. His suffering only deepened his symbolic importance to Ukraine.
